First-in-Class PS-Targeting Monoclonal Antibody Therapies for Viral Infections

PS, a lipid molecule normally found on the inside of cell membranes, becomes exposed on the outside of the membranes of certain viruses and virally infected cells. A growing body of published scientific research confirms that exposed PS is directly involved in the pathogenesis of many serious infectious diseases. Exposed PS suppresses inflammatory immune responses, enabling viruses to evade immune recognition and deactivating the body's normal immune system response to infection.

Bavituximab and Peregrine's other patented PS-targeting antibodies mask exposed PS, which in turn reactivates the body's immune response to the pathogen. Peregrine's PS-targeting antibodies have been shown to help clear infectious virus from the bloodstream and to induce antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity, an important anti-viral immune response.

Certain phospholipids normally found on the inside of cell membranes can become exposed on the outer surface of diseased cells. After enveloped viruses replicate within the host cell, they create their “envelope” by carrying along part of the host cell's membrane upon exiting.
As a result, the target phospholipid becomes exposed on the surface of the virus as well as on the infected host cell.
Bavituximab and other patented PS-targeting antibodies preferentially bind to these exposed phospholipids.
The body's immune system is then alerted to attack the virus particles and virally infected cells.
